Few days to the 2017 International Table Tennis Federation, ITTF World Cup in Liege, Beligum, Nigeria’s sensation ping ponger, Aruna Quadri, has emerged champions of men’s singles of the ITTF Challenge tagged Polish Open.
The Nigerian who has been listed among the top twenty table tennis players in the world that will compete at this month’s prestigous ITTF World Cup, defeated Japan’s Kaii Yoshida by four set to two, 11-7, 11-13 11-8, 6-11, 11-8, 14-12, (4- 2) to become the first African to win ITTF title outside the continent.
The final match against the Japanese lived up to expectation as both players tested each other strength-for-strength and skills-for-skills but the Nigeria’s ace table tennis player won the game.
As the tournament’s number one seed, Quadri ensured that he maintains his status with a resounding victory to the chagrin of the Polish table tennsi fans who supported the Japanese ping ponger throughout the encounter.
In the semi final clash, Quadri, who donated a table tennis kits to the General Manager of Lagos State Radio Service, owner of Radio Lagos/EKOFM, Ayobami Shotonwa, outsmashed Kazakhstan’s Kirill Gerassimenko by four set to two, 11-5, 8-11, 11-8, 11-6, 7-11, 11-6.
In the women’s singles event, it was Japanese affair as ITTF World Cup defending champion, Mima Ito defeated her compatriot Saki Shibata 4-1 to emerge as winner.
The ITTF World Cup will stroke- off on October 20 to 22, in Belgium.
